OYO SPEAKER CONDEMNS PREVALENCE OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATIONS IN THE STATE

The Speaker, Oyo state House of Assembly, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin has condemned the high rate of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the state and charged necessary stakeholders to be more committed to the fight against the practice.

The Speaker made the declaration today while speaking at One Day advocacy programme , organized for lawmakers in Oyo State.

Hon. Ogundoyin stated that it was sad and worrisome that Oyo state has the third highest prevalence of FGM in Nigeria after Ekiti and Osun States respectively.

The Speaker declared that the 9th Oyo state House of Assembly will give total support to the implementation of the law forbidding FGM, reminding the people of the state that the practice has no known benefit hence, it should be discarded.

He stressed further that members of the 9th Oyo Assembly will map out strategies towards monitoring those who still engage in FGM,he added that the practice is a gross violation of the right of a girl child, and should be completely eradicated in our society.

Hon. Ogundoyin, therefore, urged all stakeholders to work towards removing Oyo state from the list of the states, with prevalence of the practice.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ifeoma Anagbogu stated that the advocacy program was organized as a part of efforts to seek the support of the Legislators in implementing laws and policies on FGM, and also to increase budgetary allocation to the Ministry of Women Affairs in the State towards curbing the practice.

The advocacy program organized by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs And Social Development in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund was attended by all members of the 9th Oyo State of Assembly and officials of the State Ministry of Women Affairs.
